Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Earn Nostalgic Triumph Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the ground as Forest supporters reveled in another success against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the European Cup back in the year 1979, but the club continue to cherish those memories. Equally, significant changes have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Win

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their domestic league – marked a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy generated from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's European Cup success in name, the encounter itself was free of any real tension or nerves.

It proved to be an event filled with nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

The home side leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were also present. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing reception when they gathered on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.

Remembering History

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While no one needed reminding of what happened next, the remaining section was unfurled as the players came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough observing events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the showing on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defense captained by their own homegrown skipper, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who finished right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to register his maiden strike since March.

Another Goal Confirms Dominance

Yates was involved in the team's next goal on the brink of half-time, too, his unmarked header saved by the goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and just his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.

A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was turned wide off Malmö back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a powerful header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Struggles

This was the Swedish side's first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a effort on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from distance. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the side that stunned Liverpool at their ground recently, when they also scored three times, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus during the second half.

Smooth Evening for Forest

It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the game long since sewn up and later introduced 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the club legends supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of producing of excitement, as well.
