Aston Martin's Alonso Leads First Session at Marina Bay

Marina Bay Street Circuit

3-5 October will see the grand prix starting at British Summer Time on race day.

Live commentary streamed on radio channels and mobile app.

FP1 Results Overview

The team's Fernando Alonso was fastest beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and reigning champion in FP1 for the Marina Bay race.

McLaren's drivers Australian rookie and British talent wrapped up the practice in fifth and sixth.

Piastri was 0.217 seconds faster than Norris.

Alonso was a tenth and a half ahead of Leclerc and 0.276secs clear than the Red Bull star.

The Italian squad's British icon was P4.

Weekend Outlook

Unlikely that the Silverstone-based team will be front-runners for the top spot.

However, the outfit are optimistic of a strong showing on a tight circuit that is better matched to their chassis, which runs more competitively when high levels of aerodynamic grip are called for.

Veteran racer Fernando is also known as a Marina Bay expert, and usually excels on the Singapore circuit.

But he was probably using a lighter load or a higher engine mode than his rivals, or both, to achieve that pace.

Session Details

His team-mate Lance Stroll was a significant margin behind in the lower order.

He had issues with his seat early in the session and was also evaluating new components.

FP1 in Singapore is not reflective of race pace under lights as it is held in afternoon sun in late afternoon, while grid-deciding session and the grand prix are staged after dark.

Championship Standings

The McLaren driver leads Norris by a solid margin with remaining rounds to go entering the weekend in the Lion City.

The Woking-based team are poised to wrap up the team title on Sunday.

The only way they can fail to secure it in this race is if Mercedes outscore them by thirty-one or the Scuderia manage it by 35.

Rival Teams

Red Bull are positive of a strong result after recent successes in Italy and Azerbaijan ahead of this Grand Prix.

It was a relief when precipitation coming down ahead of FP1 cleared by the time the cars took to the track on a surface that had not been wet.

Motorsport adviser Helmut Marko said before the session that they needed a uninterrupted running to begin properly on understanding their chassis settings for the Grand Prix.
