‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to success with Athletic

Whenhe first time the Spanish forward played in the UK, an young playing for the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he scored. During his subsequent match he played in England, against Sunderland following that, he converted. The third time, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. When he returned to the city to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did their duty: they substituted him.

“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to the airport and another trip to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Uttering the name lights him up. It has become a tough year for the club, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway accompanied by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Now he is the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

The player believed it difficult enough just to make the first team and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he suffered a serious knee problem, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you progress through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, address that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All the minor details: do them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Especially after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
