Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Establish Artificial Intelligence Data Center in India

Computing Infrastructure
India stands as a prime location for data centres due to its affordable data rates and quickly expanding internet user base.

Google's parent company Alphabet plans to commit fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI data hub in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The facility, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, is set to become a part of Google's global network of artificial intelligence hubs located in a dozen nations.

"It stands as the greatest AI hub that we plan to invest in worldwide, outside of the US," Google Cloud's chief executive announced at an conference in the capital city of Delhi recently, adding that the financial commitment will be allocated over the next five years.

The revelation arrives during a period American President Donald Trump has been asking companies from the United States to prioritise domestic investment.

The Expanding Position of India in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure

The country has emerged as a key destination for AI data centers. India's low data costs and swiftly increasing internet user base have turned it into a focal point for AI and cloud growth for technology leaders.

"This center will bring our industry-leading technology to businesses and consumers in the country, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress throughout the nation," stated Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Specifics of the Project

An official contract to finalise the project is set to be signed this Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government said.

"It constitutes a significant advancement for the digital progression of our state, technological innovation, and global standing," said the minister for technology Nara Lokesh.

The project will merge cloud and AI infrastructure with sustainable power solutions and an expanded fibre-optic network.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

This initiative is part of the local administration's plan to develop six gigawatts of data center capability by the year 2029.

Computing facilities are tangible infrastructures that house the networking and computing devices that companies use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

These include hosting servers, memory systems and connectivity devices like routers and firewalls, combined with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.

Funding Benefits

In Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been offering reduced-cost property and power to attract worldwide funders.

Industry Growth

The nation's data center sector has expanded quickly in the recent half-decade, crossing the 1GW capability milestone in the year 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 level.
