Australian police have called off the hunt for a four-year-old child who has been disappeared in the outback for almost three weeks, after fresh efforts were unable to locate any traces of the youngster.

Sequence of Events

The child was last seen playing near his residence on a secluded rural property close to Yunta, about 300km from Adelaide, on late September.

His grandparent left him alone for about half an hour before returning, only to discover the youngster missing, prompting one of the most extensive ground and aerial searches in local past.

Latest Status

Authorities - who do not think there was wrongdoing - say they will persist examining, but that the case has become a "search for recovery".

Earlier, police briefly reduced the operation, only to resume it on Tuesday alongside eighty military personnel.

"Official Grant Stevens said officials were scanning a more extensive region based on new assessments from survivability and operation experts, rather than any new information."

Operation Obstacles

On Friday, authorities confirmed that the recent search had not found any traces of the boy.

"The fact that Gus is a little boy, the environment is extremely rugged, challenging and subject to changing weather conditions has made the searching difficult and more difficult for those participating," officials said in a statement.

About 470 square kilometers - an zone roughly double the dimensions of a major city - has now been covered, and a twelve-member unit set up recently is expected to carry on looking into. Police have not excluded more searches of the location in the time ahead.

Gus, who has been characterized as an curious but reserved boy, was observed dressed in a dark headwear, pale gray pants, footwear and a navy full-sleeve shirt featuring a bright Minion character.

The incident has sparked huge concern throughout the country, with photographs of the light-haired, wavy-haired child shown across publications and discussion running rife digitally.

It prompted authorities to appeal that individuals cease phoning them with their "theories", and urge for them to access information from credible sources.

Relatives Response

Police recently said the boy's relatives stay "resilient" despite the heartbreaking conditions.

"One can understand just how they are experiencing... without having answers as to exactly where the boy is and what's transpired to him. This would be heartbreaking for every loved ones," Spokesperson the commissioner said.

By means of a spokesperson, the family household has earlier said they are "overwhelmed" by their son's disappearance.

"This constitutes a trauma to our relatives and loved ones, and we are having trouble to understand what has transpired," a family representative said.

"Gus's disappearance is noticed in all of us, and we yearn for him exceeding expressions can express."
