Previous Down Under Lawmaker Jailed for Over Five Years for Sex Crimes
A former Australian politician sentenced of attacking two individuals connected through work was given to five years and nine months in detention.
Case Details
The defendant, 44, remained in prison since July after the court found him guilty of raping an individual and indecently assaulting a second person, in separate incidents in 2013 then 2015.
Ward acted for the seaside community of the regional area in the NSW parliament from the year 2011. He left his position as a government minister when accusations came to light in recent years but declined to leave his seat and won again in 2023.
Sentencing Details
Justice the court official considered his visual impairment of legal blindness in the judgment and concluded "no different consequence besides incarceration could be considered".
Ward, who appeared via remote connection at Parramatta District Court, will serve at least 45 months in prison before he can request early release.
The judge said the legal system needs to "send a stern message to like-minded offenders that illegal behaviors of this nature will be met with serious punishments".

Additionally stated Ward had "avoided punishment for a decade and enjoyed a life without a programme or consequence for his actions during that period".
Following the verdict, the individual attempted a rejected court challenge to continue in parliament and resigned just prior to the congress could oust him.
Defense attorneys has previously said he plans to appeal the conviction.
Trial Evidence
The defendant's lengthy proceedings in the state court learned that he asked a drunk young adult to his residence in the first incident and attacked him on multiple occasions, despite the victim's efforts to oppose.
Subsequently, he attacked a mid-twenties office worker at his property after an event at the legislature.
Ward had maintained the second incident didn't happen, and that the other complainant was confused about their meeting from the earlier year.
However, prosecutors contended that significant resemblances in the testimonies of the victims, who did not know the other, demonstrated they were accurate in their accounts.
The panel debated for 72 hours before announcing the convictions.
His departure caused a special election in the district in autumn, which was won by the opposition party.
